Why don't I feel like myself anymore?

By Kristin Milan  ·  April 13, 2026
A woman with long silver hair, seen from behind at her own front door at dusk, warm golden light spilling out of the house over her.

Often because you've been searching outward for a self that was never actually lost. After years of books, workshops, and inner work, the searching itself can become the very thing that keeps you from the home you're already standing in.

The books. The workshops. The retreats. The practices. Years of trying to understand yourself, heal yourself, find yourself. And still, something doesn't land.

You know that voice. The one that says you haven't found the right teacher yet, the right method, the right practice. That if you just keep searching, you'll finally arrive at the version of yourself that feels whole.

That voice isn't helping you search. It's keeping you searching. And the searching itself may be the thing holding you away from home.

What if you were never lost?

The self-help world runs on a premise most of us never question: something about you is broken, or at least incomplete, and you need to find the missing piece. So we look, outward, always outward, for the framework or the teacher who will finally make it click.

Many women who've done years of inner work still feel disconnected from themselves. That isn't a failure of the work. Long stretches of stress and survival pull a woman away from her own internal signals over time. She was never lost. She was separated from the signal her nervous system organizes around.

What feeling like yourself really is

After thirteen years of HeartMath training and a great many sessions, this is what I've come to understand. When the heart settles into a steady, coherent rhythm, around one cycle every ten seconds, the body's other systems begin to organize around it. HeartMath's research describes this state as coherence, and you can feel it as the moment the body exhales and settles.

What you experience as feeling like yourself has a physical side to it. It's your systems in sync, all receiving the same steady signal. When you've spent years in stress or survival mode, that signal gets buried. You lose the reference point, and you call it being lost. But the signal is still there. You just couldn't feel it over everything else.

Coming home is a turn, not a destination

I learned this from the inside, in one of the hardest seasons of my life. From the bottom of it, I asked myself a question: does it have to be this way? Something opened. Not an answer, not a breakthrough. More like a door I didn't know was there.

That was when I felt my own Living Flame for the first time, not as a concept but as something alive in me. I didn't find it by searching. I found it by turning inward when there was nowhere else to go.

How to begin turning back

You don't come all the way home in one practice. But the first step matters more than any that follow, because it's the one where you stop searching outward and turn around.

Put a hand on your chest. Breathe slowly until you can feel your own heartbeat. That rhythm is the signal your body has been broadcasting the whole time you were looking elsewhere. Instead of I need to find myself, try I'm right here, and I'm turning toward home.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I feel like myself even after therapy and self-help?

Often because so much of that work rests on the idea that you're broken and must find a missing piece, which keeps you searching outward. Feeling like yourself tends to come less from finding something new and more from turning back toward what's already there.

What does it mean to come home to yourself?

It's the felt return to your own inner signals after a long time being pulled away from them. Not a single destination you reach, but a turning you practice.

Is it normal to feel disconnected from yourself in midlife?

Very. Long seasons of stress, caregiving, or grief can bury your sense of your own center. The disconnection is common, and it can be reversed.
